Ransomware attack cost Health Network $ 1.5 million per day

The University of Vermont Health Network in Vermont, a healthcare provider, fell victim to ransomware in October 2020 and has yet to fully restore computer systems.  Most of the devices have been brought online, but some applications are still not working, causing delays in various departments, including radiology.

According to Stephen Leffler, CEO of UVM Health Network, the cyberattack cost $ 1.5 million a day in lost profits and recovery costs.

UVM Health Network completed the first phase of Epic EHR implementation in November 2019, launching additional clinical and administrative capabilities for inpatients and outpatients, including clinical care, billing, registration and scheduling.  The second and third phases were planned for March 2021 and November 2021.  However, the cumulative impact of the ransomware attack and the impact of the coronavirus infection (COVID-19) pandemic pushed those dates back to November 2021 and April 2022.
